I started the 2d animation course four days ago. I was really looking forward to learn these techniques. I did some 2d animation before and I know how hard it could be.
I kept telling me to make it simple and don`t do anything off the topic.
But there`s always a mean voice whispering in my mind: “Do it! Do it!”
And I always listen to that thing and bring myself into some serious trouble I can`t get away from.
And I just wrote loads of rubbish that is non-related to animation. Sorry.
We learned the 12 principles of animation by actually making easy attempts to show these elements. As always my hand-drawings are awful and after three weeks I did nothing to improve it but only moaning meaninglessly like right now.
Pose to Pose technique. Everytime when I do pose to pose I mess up with all my paper…
I also did a bouncing ball animation which doesnt` really fit the idea of excercising deformation of the ball while moving in the air. The idea was to make the ball fast enough to create a almost straight arc of movement and at the last few bounces it slows down. The effect looks may be better than what I did up there.
The ball is too small. Yeah I know. Sorry for that.
And come back to the presentation we would do on Friday, I just finished the frames and I`m planning to line test it before the class if I`m lucky enough.
I did a little bit character design and most of its feature are ignores while the making process because they are too complex. I wish I could have a brain that automatically calculate all the phsical movements of all my objects while I was drawing. But I never passed a math test when I was in Grade 5. So no, sorry.
As an international student. I have some words to say about the underground system under this great city.
It`s actually quite clear what I`m going to say, so I won`t say it for now.
The project is inspired from the experience of unable to connect internet underground. I cannot open map, message, or browser. It causes me big problems as I don`t always know the road.
So, I created a small animation talking about an old man who met the same problem with me.
Say cheese!
The whole set is really simple, I used some color change to add more dramatic feelings. I didn`t use any of those fancy technique because I cannot. You can see the scene and elements didn`t change a lot throughout the whole animation. Therefore, not that much of process I can give.
About matching up the theme “Connection”, I wish I can create something that is deeply connected to all of us, or most part of us, that we may all response to my works. Afterall, powerful artworks should be able to recall some part from the deep heart of the common folks.
Thanks for reading.
Workspace: normal AE UI.
Storyboard: It`s really a simple story. I have nothing to plan, actually.
Oh, and thank you ZapSplat for providing clear and free sound effects for my video.
The one who is crazy and start to talk to himself.
So now my laptop is rendering my work, and I thought maybe it`s time to write something before my submission. So, here`s some updates:
I did some changed to the lighting, now everything looks yellow and more thirsty.
I mean the land, the land is thirsty to water.
I finally created some form of vegatation and water, water!!! to decorate my city. And some coconut trees.
Yeah you can see some green pixels and a small lake around this dead, thirsty wasteland.
Before that, you `ll find the city looks way bigger than before!
And even a dome! Why dome?!
Here comes back to my sad handdrawings that I did before the session started and my TRPG game log.
According to the settings, people tried to find out where this giant legacy came from and who made it, they firstly built small tents to do some research, then the traders came to gain some cash and maybe rare metals from the ruins. and then craftmen showed up to sell their works to the traders and scientists, and more and more humans came and decades later they settled down and formed this city.
Sorry for my long sentence, the point is the main goal of this city, or the great achievement of those citizens is to find out the secrets of this golem.
So, such great research must need an archive, or a library. And I took the reference from the French National Library.
Pictured by Poulpy on Wikipedia. Gosh I hope I can visit this place some day. But I can`t read French…
And from that I drew a closer look of an reseacher who is doing some paperworks. This shall be the figure of most of the citizens in the city I created.
Hey that doesn`t look like the French National Library at all !!
You can see a small outside view of the library near the main sketch. So this is the idea of the dome and where does it came from. I add more pillars and a bigger ground floor when I model this library. It should be full of essays of the new finding of that golem. And I made it way bigger than I thought before to underline the wold National. I made a metal look on the dome to make a color difference. some of the domes in London are made by bronze. Maybe light blue will also coexist with the desert landform…
Speaking of color difference. I put a small blue belt on all the buildings to show some artificial features and also some contrast. There is a small lake under the library because most of the desert cities are build near an oasis. so this one should not be an exception.
And water in desert means fluid gold! Anyone who want to live here will come to the library and gaze upon the shining dome, speak their pray and get what they need! That is the power of knowledge!
No it isn`t. Sorry.
And I add some curvy paths onto the land because I think it`s bad for composition of there`s only blocky things. Various sahpes may look better. There`s also some tiny birds I add to make the whole scene more lively. Becasue before this everything is motionless. No one `s moving.
I think I`ll call it the Wisdome
There`s a little bit update on the golem, I changed the color but it`s not clear to tell the difference. I changed the shape of the helmet and add black face under it to make it looks more like a face. But it`s also hard to tell the difference. Sorry.
So that`s it! I finished my 3D story world project in exactly four days. Thank you Luca for your tutorial videos and people on Youtube who I can`t recall their names.
“Citizens, forty centuries look down upon you.”
I hope next time I can add texture to those objects. And when the sun shines the sand, the sand will start to sparkle becasue of all the particles and different reflect angles they have. I wish I can create that effect so the scene looks more realistic. And modeling skills. My golem, is a disaster.

I think I should better explain what D&D or TRPG is. So…
A tabletop role-playing game (typically abbreviated as TRPG or TTRPG), also known as a pen-and-paper role-playing game, is a form of role-playing game (RPG) in which the participants describe their characters’ actions through speech. Participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, and the actions succeed or fail according to a set formal system of rules and guidelines. Within the rules, players have the freedom to improvise; their choices shape the direction and outcome of the game.
Thank you wikipedia.
D&D is a very famous trpg game and probably the oldest one. The game doesn`t need a monitor or a geforce 3090ti graphic card. All the dungeons, cities, the room you ordered in the inn, the monster you encounter and so on. They are all based on the players` imagination. Or emergent narrative.
I hope I used the term right.
So, Sword World 2.5 is similiar to D&D, but with a rather different plot, rules and more Japanese elements.
One page from Sword World 2.5 guidelines. The text describes an Elf Paladin
So elegant! It`s a scan file so the color are gone, but this style is still nice.
I guess it`s true that you can still be appealing once you got the right ratios even without color…
Sorry I wrote too much useless texts. The point is, I am now playing a TRPG with my friends. In the game we are entering a huge city that is built under a way bigger ancient mechanic soldier.
The setting was, there`s a lost civilization which was able to build gigantic war machines to fight with the gods. They did something awful and destroyed themselves. But the machines left behind and after ages, humans came and build a city under it.
Sorry for my poor descriptive narrative. I hope you are starting to imagine the view, that`s what TRPG players have to do. Imagine everything from the text.
And draw it if possible.
I`m really bad at drawing so hopefully this is easy to understand…
This is the drawing I did when I was playing the game, so it`s before the ual session starts. You can see a giant and really rough drawing at the background. That shall be the ancient machine. And some dark age-ish towers as the main subject.
Well I can`t actually see how big the robot is if in this compositon so… I drew a little better digital work on a different point of view for the other players. It`s far from finished…so.
Still rough and no cities! Because I can`t draw a city! How can I model a city if I can`t even draw one? !
The buffering part on the right bottom corner is where the city should be located.
You can see that the there should be some vegetation on the groud. Like Moss or something. and the light is right behind the mountain, some of the light goes through the rocks and shines upon the city but the shadow casts by the machine still covers the most part of the plain.
I know it`s hard to see from my drawings, they are pretty bad. Sorry about this.
And I went to Luca`s 3D story world class, heard that we need to make a scene.
Well, I`m lucky that I already had something to do in my head.
So, without so much mind mapping or arranging the objects. I modeled this:
Yeah I know it`s hard to determine whether it`s a huge rock or a robot. Sorry.
You can see a different color pattlet and a basalt landform. it`s because I CANNOT MODEL MOSS OR MOUNTAIN.
I`m too weak, I did some research and I failed. I wish I could minmize the details so I can finish this work in 4 days, but it seems like I minimized too much and everything looks too simple and naive.
Well it`s not the end but I guess the final output should be something similiar.
Next thing I`ll do is maybe try to add details on the city and try to change the robot to make it more…
